How do I plant a Pin Oak tree?
When planting your newly purchased Pin Oak tree, we recommend that you dig a hole twice as wide as the root system but not deeper. Take care not to bury your tree trunk. Be sure that the root collar or root flare is slightly above the soil surface. If your tree is too low in the planting hole, compact some soil under the root ball to bring the root collar up. The most common cause of tree decline after transplanting is planting too deep. Depending on the quality of your existing soil you may need to add a locally sourced compost and new topsoil to the back-fill soil. Aim for a 50/50 mix of your existing soil and some new compost to backfill the hole.
How do I Water my Pin Oak Tree?
After back filling and lightly compacting the 50/50 mix of existing soil and compost give the Pin Oak Tree a good deep watering. This is not to be rushed. Most of the water you put on the plant at first will run away from the plant until the soil is soaked. A general rule of thumb is to count to 5 for every one gallon of pot size. For example a one gallon pot would be watered until you count to 5 a three gallon pot would be 15 and so on. Check the plant daily for the first week or so and then every other day there after. Water using the counting method for the first few weeks. Gator Bags can be used to help aid in this process and also provide plants with a good soaking due to the slow release of the water into the root-zone of the plant. Soaker Hoses can also be used to water when planting a long row of trees.
How do I Mulch my Pin Oak Tree?
We highly recommend that you mulch your Pin Oak Tree with either a ground hardwood mulch or a ground cypress mulch depending on your local availability. Any type of mulch will do but cypress or hardwood mulch will be of a higher quality and provide better nutrition overall as they breakdown. Mulching helps to keep weeds away which will compete with your new investment for water and nutrients. A 2 to 3 inch layer of mulch is sufficient but remember to leave a space between the tree trunk and your mulch. Never place mulch right next to the tree trunk.
How do I prune my Pin Oak Tree?
Pruning of newly planted trees should be limited to the removal of dead or broken branches. All other pruning should be withheld until the second or third year, when a tree has recovered from the stress of transplanting. The best time to prune oak trees is during the dormant season (November through February). Before any pruning, sanitize the blades of your pruning tools by dipping them in isopropyl alcohol. Always use sharp tools when pruning. A sharp cut will heal quicker than a jagged cut, which also minimizes the likelihood of disease. Do not use power equipment such as gas hedgers to prune trees. When pruning, be sure not to remove too many branches. Leaves and their supporting branches are major sites of food production and storage. Eliminating too much of the canopy can stress the tree and reduce growth. No more than 25 percent of the crown of the tree should be removed at any one time. We recommend consulting a professional arborist to do pruning on any mature oak tree.
