Welcome the best starter houseplant into your home and its name is ZZ. Its called ZZ Plant for short but its real name is Zamioculcas zamiifolia. Known around our nursery as EZ Plant but some folks call it Zanzibar Gem.

How to grow a ZZ Plant

ZZ Plants are very forgiving plants. Native to eastern Africa where rain rarely comes. They can go for months without water because they store water in the fleshy stems and leaves as well as rhizomes which are modified roots.

Light

ZZ Plants do well in low light or bright indirect light. Since they are slow-growing plants even in good light, in low light conditions ZZ Plants rarely produce new leaves. Direct sun will burn the leaves of a ZZ Plant so try to keep it out of direct sunlight. This plant makes an ideal plant for a window-less office or bathroom where it will only receive small amounts of fluorescent light.

Water

Over-watering is the only way to kill Zamioculcas zamiifolia houseplants. ZZ houseplants do not like wet feet so allow the soil to thoroughly dry out before watering. Keep your ZZ in a saucer of decorative gravel so the pot is not allowed to sit in water.

ZZ Plants have roots called rhizomes that can store water for long periods of time so when in doubt, do not water. Zamioculcas are very forgiving plants, allowing you to over-water a few times before showing signs of serious damage.

Pro-Tip

Yellow Leaves on a ZZ Plant are an indication that the plant has been over-watered if you start to notice this cut back on the frequency of watering and be sure to check that the pot is not being allowed to sit in water.

Soil

If you choose to pot up your ZZ Plant we recommend Espoma Organic Cactus soil. ZZ Plants can be thought of as cactus plants due to their ability to store water. Cactus soils can drain and dry quickly so there is less need to worry about your ZZ Plant sitting in wet soil.

Fertilizer

ZeeZee Plants do not need large amounts of fertilizer as they are very slow growers. Just like the ability to store water they also have the ability to store nutrients. A sprinkling of Osmocote Plus in the spring is more than enough to sustain the plant for a year.
