The striking contrast of the thin pink stripes against glossy dark green leaves creates an almost hand-painted effect. The unique foliage is slender and oval-shaped with dark purple undersides and is safe for cats and dogs, according to the ASPCA Plant Toxicity List.
Ideal care for the Ornata Calathea includes medium to bright indirect light and moist soil. This plant does like to dry slightly between each watering, though, and it is best to use distilled water over tap water. What type of light is right for my Calathea ornata?
Pinstripe Calathea ornata plants do well with bright, indirect light. An eastern or northern facing window would be ideal. A western or southern window would work, as long as a curtain or blind prevents direct light from touching the foliage. Its delicate leaves will burn and lose color if exposed to too much light. This plant also performs well without any bright indirect light, and just fluorescent light.
How much water does my Calathea ornata need?
Calathea ornata's natural environment is high in humidity. As a houseplant, it likes to dry out occasionally between watering. They will tolerate staying moist, but prefer not to have constantly wet soil. When you repot your plant, be sure to choose a pot with adequate drainage. Regular misting or placing your Pinstripe plant in a window in the kitchen or the bathroom would suffice.
