How often should I water my Calathea Musaica?

How often should I water my Calathea Musaica?

Calathea Mosaicca prefers to stay evenly moist in well-draining soil. They will tolerate the soil drying out some between waterings, but if you leave them too dry for too long, the leaves will droop and may even start to brown at the edges. We recommend checking your plant every few days and only water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. When they are in soil that is too wet, it is not ideal either since that could cause root rot. We recommend watering well until the water drains out the bottom of the pot. A humidity tray can help maintain humidity within the leaves. Filtered water is preferable to hard water.

How much light do Calathea Musaica Plants need?

How much light do Calathea Musaica Plants need?

Calathea Musaica plants are native to tropical environments. In these environments, they are protected from direct sunlight by tropical canopies. However, Calathea Musaica can handle more direct sunlight conditions than most Calatheas. A bit of direct sunlight in the evening or early morning will do your plant good. Mid-day sun exposure should be bright, indirect light, or else your plant's leaves could become scorched. Because this Calathea can handle various sunlight conditions, it may be best to change its placement in your home according to the seasons. For example, a north-east facing window will be perfect for winter, but there will be too much sun exposure in the summer. Keep an eye on your plant's leaves and if you notice any brown patches or edges, consider providing less direct sunlight.

What is the right potting soil for Calathea Musaica?

What is the right potting soil for Calathea Musaica?

Calathea Musaica thrives in a well-balanced, organic potting mix. Always be sure your plant's soil retains moisture but still has adequate drainage. This is crucial because if your plant sits in too much standing water, its roots will rot and become diseased. You can add coarse sand to your potting mix to help amend more drainage. Or you can add peat moss, humus, or other organic matter to your potting mix to make it more water-retentive.

What kind of fertilizer is best for My Calathea Musaica?

What kind of fertilizer is best for My Calathea Musaica?

You have two options when it comes to fertilizing your Calathea Musaica. You can add fertilizer to your plant while you are potting it. We recommend adding 10% compost to the potting soil. This method will provide nutrients for at least 1 to 2 years for your plant. This option also has almost no risk of nutrient burn. If you choose this option, be mindful that it can impact the soil's ability to drain excess water properly. Your second option is to fertilize your plant regularly by using a balanced, water-soluble plant fertilizer. Use it to about 1/4 to 1/2 the recommended strength for outdoor plants and apply every 4 to 6 weeks during its growing seasons in spring and summer. We recommend avoiding fertilizing in the winter and fall because this is their growth dormancy period.
