Be sure to read our planting instructions to ensure a healthy and happy plant for years to come!
How much water does my Calathea Shining Star need?
Calathea Shining Star Plants like to dry out occasionally between watering. They will tolerate staying moist, but prefer not to have constantly wet soil. Calathea Shining Star appreciate humidity, a pebble tray or window in the kitchen or the bathroom would suffice.
What type of light does my Calathea Roseopicta Shining Star require?
Calathea Shining Star do well with bright, indirect light. An eastern or northern facing window would be ideal. A western or southern window would work, as long as a curtain or blind prevents direct light from touching the foliage. This plant also performs well without any bright indirect light, and just fluorescent light.
What soil is best for my Calathea Shining Star?
Calathea Shining Star need a very well draining soil, and prefer to have slightly dry conditions. Regular potting mix or potting mix with sand or fir bark mixed in works well for plants potted in containers. This plant likes to be root bound, so you will rarely need to repot. Wait to repot until the roots are such that there is pushback when you try to push your finger in to test the soil moisture. When repotting, make sure to use fresh potting mix and a pot that is 1 to 1.5 inches wider in diameter than the previous pot. This plant does best in pots with drainage, as self-watering pots without any drainage can sometimes hold too much water and cause root rot.
How should I fertilize my Calathea Shining Star?
Any all purpose, foliage fertilizer will work for Calathea Shining Star. Indoor houseplant fertilizers fall into two groups: water soluble, liquid quick release, and granular, slow release fertilizers. Jack’s Classic Indoor plant food works well as a powder, quick release fertilizer that is mixed with water to quickly provide nutrients to a plant that has been in a container for an extended time. Osmocote Indoor/Outdoor is an option as a granular, slow release fertilizer that can be applied while potting and planting. Any type of fertilizer offers nutrients that help plants with the transition to a new environment.
