Asparagus Ferns

Asparagus Fern prefers bright, indirect sunlight. Northern or eastern facing windows will keep your plant happy. Outside, Asparagus Fern can handle anywhere from full shade to full sun. Plants grown in full sun will require more moisture than plants in the shade.

Asparagus Ferns thrive in a variety of sunlight conditions, from full sun to shade. However, if your plant's needles are turning yellow, your plant could be exposed to too much full sunlight. Their growth and color tend to be best if they receive shade throughout parts of the day. We recommend that your plant is in the shade during the middle of the day. Midday is when the sun is its brightest and when your plant's needles can burn and change color.

Pruning Asparagus Fern houseplants is not necessary, but there are a few reasons why you may want to clean up your plant. If you want your fern to keep a specific shape, carefully trim your plant's foliage to the desired shape. Also, if you see any dead, dying, or diseased branches, you can cut those back at the base of the plant. Beware: its soft-looking leaves have sharp thorns, so wear gloves to be safe. If you are cutting away diseased parts of your plant, be sure to use clean pruning shears so that you do not spread disease anywhere else.

Asparagus Fern plants need moist, well-draining soil conditions. These houseplants cannot have consistently wet soil and do not do well in dry soil either. It is best to use a regular potting mix or a potting mix with peat moss. The peat moss in the soil will help retain moisture. We recommend that you use Espoma Organic Potting Mix. Always make sure the container you are planting your Fern has drainage holes to help drain excess water.
