Red Azalea Bushes for Sale Online

Known as one of America's favorite shrubs, Red Azaleas are a staple of many gardens due to their amazing adaptability and classic presence in any landscape design. Their aromatic fragrance and striking red color makes them the perfect plant to use for foundation planting or as a focal point in your landscape. It is difficult to find such vibrant red flowers in the garden, but with Azaleas, you have an abundance of options.

A quick trick: many gardeners use azaleas as concealing shrubs; they will take advantage of the plant's dense foliage and plant them around areas of your yard that aren't the most attractive. For example, if you have a crack in your home's foundation, plant a red azalea to conceal it.

How to Care for Azaleas

Mulch

While mulching is not necessary for these shrubs, we do highly recommend doing so. The right mulch can add extra protection from weeds and extra nutrients. Try using high-quality hardwood or ground Cyprus (depending on your location). Layer 2 to 3 inches of mulch but do not cover the stem. Make sure to keep the mulch 1 inch away from the base of the shrub's trunk.

Pruning

The most important reason for pruning Azaleas is to improve their overall health which in turn will always provide your garden with beautiful blossoming shrubs. The best time to prune is after all the blossoms have faded but before any new blossoms bud. Removing any dying or dead limbs will minimize any possibility of diseases.

Fertilizer

Azaleas love a well-balanced, extended-release, fertilizer and we recommend using the Espoma Holly-tone option at Garden Goods Direct. The best time to fertilize is in the spring after any possibility of frost has passed. After about 6 to 8 weeks you can fertilize again to encourage more growth, especially on younger shrubs and more blossoms on any shrub. You can also add organic matter to the soil combined with a shot of fertilizer for its maximum effect.

Water

We recommend watering your Azalea deeply and thoroughly during the summer to ensure they get water that equals about 1 inch of rainwater. Be sure not to overwater your shrub, instead, water very slowly so the water is able to absorb into the root instead of running off. Overwatering is possible and should be avoided because it can cause root damage.
