As temperatures drop to the low forties and the hours of sunshine begin to dwindle, it’s easy to get into a cold-season slump. But it does not have to be this way! By fully embracing the warm tones of fall, you can easily cultivate a cozy, inviting outdoor space to enjoy each day.

We recently partnered with home décor experts and influencers @flipping_vintage76 and @ourforeverrhome to revamp their outdoor fall spaces. In this blog, we will highlight some key factors that worked to elevate these influencers’ spaces, along with tips for you to create the best fall display for your home.

Easy Steps To Transform Your Space This Fall

1. Incorporate Cool Season Annuals

The first step to cultivating a warm and cozy outdoor space is to incorporate cool season annuals into your display! Tayler, the owner of @flipping_vintage76, opted for a stunning selection of warm-toned chrysanthemums and mixed in some cooler-toned Kamome Red Kale to balance out the display.

Some other cool-season annuals to consider planting this fall include pansies, ornamental peppers, and celosia!

2. Layering Plants and Pumpkins

The next step in creating an incredible fall display is layering. Whether you use planters and elevated stands or take advantage of preexisting elevated surfaces like steps, layering your display helps ensure that each element can be easily seen and admired!

Additionally, everyone knows no autumn décor is complete without a few pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns! Don’t be afraid to go over the top with this element. You can simply never have too many pumpkins!

3. Thrifting and Repurposing Décor

In addition to annuals and pumpkins, thrifty décor can also bring a fun and cozy feel to a space! Not only is thrifting more ecologically friendly, but it also adds unique charm and elegance to a space. Tayler is a big supporter of thrift and antique shopping to source the décor throughout her home, hence where her platform got its name! She repurposed an old ceramic milk jug container to house her mums, and it just brought that much more charm to the display!

4. Planting Fall Color Forward Trees and Shrubs

The next and possibly most obvious step to creating a stunning fall landscape is to incorporate fall-colored trees and shrubs. For many, the most impactful part of fall is the magnificent array of colors that deciduous trees and shrubs provide before dropping their leaves for the winter season.

Some iconic fall color trees include the October Glory Maple and the Red Oak. These trees turn deep shades of scarlet red and are sure to light up any fall landscape! While the first few years of growing this tree might not have the biggest impact on the landscape due to their smaller size, we promise these trees are worth the wait for as they mature, their fall display is unlike any other.

Some iconic fall-color shrubs that bring beauty and vibrancies to a fall yard include the Aronia Autumn Magic, Burning Bush, and Itea Henry’s Garnet. These deciduous shrubs exibit unique displays of color transformation in mid to late fall that are captivating and audacious.

5. Planting Evergreens

The next important step to creating an incredible autumn display is to incorporate evergreen trees and shrubs. Evergreen trees and shrubs bring an element of permanence and formal beauty to a fall landscape when many other plants are headed into dormancy for the winter season.

Kelly, the owner of the Instagram account @ourforeverrhome, opted for 20 of our Gem Box Inkberry Holly Shrubs and two Blue Point Juniper Spiral Topiaries to bring those deep, classic green hues to the exterior of her home. These plants elevated the feel of her outdoor space and increased her home’s overall curb appeal!

6. Plant Grasses and Late-Season Flowering Shrubs

Ornamental grasses and late-season flowering shrubs add unique shape and texture to a fall landscape. Even as these plants head into dormancy, the dried flower heads make for a delightful display in the landscape and also are gorgeous in dried flower arrangements to use throughout the home!

Some of our personal favorites for grasses this time of year include Miscanthus Adagio, Pink Muhly Grass, and Blue Dune Lyme Grass. Regarding late flowering shrubs, our best sellers include Limelight Hydrangea, Autumn Fire Encore Azalea, and the Pink Double Knockout Rose Bush.

7. Incorporate Cozy Lighting

Anyone getting into interior and exterior décor will likely come to find that lighting can make such a huge difference! In the case of fall outdoor spaces, Kelly from @ourforeverrhome utilized spotlights along the planting beds to light up her outdoor space in the evenings. It’s amazing how even just a little bit of light can make the biggest impact on a display!

8. Growing Fall Perennials

The last tip we have for transforming your outdoor space this autumn is to plant fall blooming perennials! While spring and summer are the seasons most people think of when they think of flower gardens, fall is actually such a wonderful season to grow flowers!

The most eye-catching and popular perennials for the fall season include aster, anemone, and solidago! Coming in a range of colors, these unique bloomers are highly tolerant of a range of conditions and they easily bring beauty to any and all fall gardens.
