A Pure White Tall Garden Phlox Made for Summer Borders

Luminary® Backlight Tall Garden Phlox delivers the generous flower clusters and sweet summer fragrance that gardeners expect from classic garden phlox, but in a more refined, manageable plant. Its sturdy upright stems form a dense clump topped with well-defined panicles of pure white flowers.

The bright flowers stand out clearly against dark green foliage, producing a clean, high-contrast display that is easy to see from across the landscape. A subtle pale yellow eye adds warmth near the center of each blossom without taking away from the plant’s crisp white appearance.

Backlight is particularly valuable during midsummer, when many spring-flowering perennials have finished, and the landscape needs a fresh wave of color. Its upright habit gives perennial borders structure while the white flowers visually lighten combinations filled with deeper purple, blue, red, or pink blooms.

Unlike taller traditional garden phlox that may reach four feet or more, Backlight matures at approximately 28 to 30 inches. It provides enough height to make an impact without overwhelming smaller beds, foundation plantings, or narrow perennial borders.

Fragrant White Flower Panicles That Glow into the Evening

Pure white flowers make Backlight an excellent choice for moon gardens, evening patios, and landscapes designed to remain visible after sunset. White petals reflect fading light, making the flower clusters appear luminous in the early evening, when darker flower colors begin to fade.

The lightly sweet fragrance adds another layer of interest, especially when plants are positioned near a walkway, seating area, garden gate or frequently used entrance. Cut stems can also be brought indoors for summer arrangements, where the white flowers coordinate easily with nearly any other color.

Backlight begins its main display in midsummer and continues into late summer. Removing faded flower clusters can help keep the plant tidy, reduce unwanted seedlings, and encourage additional flowering when growing conditions remain favorable.

For a larger display, repeat Backlight through a border or plant several together in a broad drift. The unified white color creates a stronger landscape effect than isolated flowers and provides a calm transition between brighter or more complicated planting combinations.

A Compact Upright Habit with Strong Landscape Presence

Backlight Tall Garden Phlox grows approximately 28 to 30 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide. The plant develops multiple upright stems, creating a full clump rather than a single narrow column of flowers.

Its medium height makes it useful through the middle of a perennial border, where it can rise above low groundcovers without hiding taller plants behind it. It can also be used near a foundation, along a sunny fence, beside a porch, or in a large mixed container.

Plant Backlight with lavender, coneflowers, Russian sage, ornamental grasses, daylilies, perennial salvia, or alliums. White flowers provide a visual pause between stronger colors and can help a mixed planting look more deliberate and balanced.

Backlight also works beautifully in cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, rain-garden edges, and cutting gardens. Space plants approximately 20 to 24 inches apart so the clumps can fill in without becoming crowded.

Mildew-Resistant Dark Green Foliage for Humid Gardens

Powdery mildew is one of the most common frustrations associated with traditional tall garden phlox. It can leave susceptible plants coated with a pale, dusty-looking film during warm, humid weather, especially when the plants are crowded or grown with insufficient sunlight.

Luminary® Backlight was selected for its excellent resistance to powdery mildew, even under conditions where more susceptible phlox cultivars may show symptoms. It's clean, dark green leaves provide a polished background for the white flower clusters and help the plant remain attractive beyond its peak bloom.

Disease resistance reduces the likelihood of mildew problems, but it does not eliminate the need for good planting practices. Backlight still performs best with direct sunlight, appropriate spacing, good air circulation, and water applied near the soil rather than repeatedly over the leaves.

Its lance-shaped foliage forms a dense upright clump from spring until frost. After freezing weather arrives, the stems and leaves turn brown and die back naturally. Fresh growth emerges again from the perennial crown in spring.

Full-Sun Care for Strong Stems and Repeat Flowers

Plant Luminary® Backlight Phlox in full sun for its strongest stems, cleanest foliage, and heaviest flowering. It can grow with four to six hours of direct sunlight, but six or more hours is preferable, particularly in humid climates where sunlight helps dry the foliage.

Choose average to fertile soil that drains well while retaining moderate moisture. Tall garden phlox does not perform well in standing water, but it should not be allowed to remain severely dry during active growth and flowering. A light layer of mulch helps conserve moisture and keep the root zone cooler during summer.

Water deeply at the base of the plant when the upper layer of soil begins to dry. Avoid frequent shallow watering and leave enough space between neighboring plants for air to move through the foliage.

Deadhead the finished flower panicles to improve the plant’s appearance and encourage rebloom. Deer may occasionally pass over garden phlox, but browsing pressure differs from one property to another. Backlight should be considered deer-tolerant rather than deer-proof, and tender growth may need protection where deer or rabbits are persistent.
