Euonymus Manhattan Shrubs

Euonymus kiautschovicus 'Manhattan'

Euonymus Manhattan Shrubs are an excellent choice for a fast-growing evergreen hedge, informal screen or espalier. This underutilized shrub has dense, lush, dark green foliage and a naturally neat, formal appearance, without pruning. Often misspelled as Manhatten Euonymus. Euonymus Manhattan will grow to be about 6 to 8 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 5 feet when left untrimmed. It reliably fills out right to the ground and therefore doesn't necessarily require smaller plants to be planted in front to hide the unsightly bare trunks.

Growing Euonymus Manhattan Shrubs

Euonymus Manhattan grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 30 years or more. Euonymus Manhattan performs equally well in full sun and full shade. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist locations. It could be said that Euonymus Manhattan is a true workhorse in the landscape.

It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. Euonymus Manhattan makes both an excellent manicured privacy hedge or in informal screen to block out utility equipment or air conditioning units. Due to its dark green foliage which remains evergreen in even the harshest of winters, it can be used in a variety of situations.

Since Euonymus Manhattan performs well in both dry and moist locations it can be used almost anywhere in the landscape. We have found that one of the best uses for this plant is on a hillside where little else grows. Due to its extensive root system, it is often used to stop soil erosion on slopes and hillsides.

Manhattan euonymus hedges also make a great natural backdrop for a colorful shrub border as well. Use their dark green leaves as a backdrop for brightly colored flowering shrubs and perennials. Colorful flowers tend to "pop" or stand out when planted in front of the dark green foliage of this plant.

Manhattan Euonymus also makes an incredible specimen plant when planted as a focal point throughout the landscape. They can withstand hard pruning with no burning and can be trimmed into a pyramid or ball shape or even trained along a wall as an espalier.

During mid-summer, small white flower cluster form which produces small but attractive, pink ornamental fruit in the fall.

Planting Information

We suggest when planting your newly purchased Euonymus Manhattan plants that you dig a hole twice as wide as the root system but not deeper. Depending on the quality of your existing soil you may need to add a locally sourced compost or topsoil to the back-fill soil. We do not recommend using straight topsoil or compost as a back-fill soil because more times than not these products will retain entirely to much moisture and will cause the root system to rot. Adding compost or topsoil will help the young feeder roots of Euonymus Manhattan to spread through the loose, nutrient rich soil, much easier than if you used solely the existing soil which more times than not will be hard and compacted. The most common cause of plant death after transplanting is planting the new plant to deep. That is why we do not recommend planting in a hole any deeper than the soil line of the plant in the pot. A good rule is that you should still be able to see the soil the plant was grown in after back-filling the hole. Bio-tone starter fertilizer is a great starter fertilizer that provides plants with mycorrhizae fungus. It is a naturally occurring beneficial fungus that colonizes on the new growing roots of plants. It creates a barrier between the roots of the plant and fungus and pathogens that can cause root rot. We love this product and use it on all plants we install in our own gardens. Bio-tone is a gardeners best friend and can help guarantee your success.
