Cat Palms (Chamaedorea cataractarum) are indoor trees native to Southern Mexico. They can grow up to 3 feet indoors. They can be grown outdoors in the summer when it's hot but must be brought in when temperatures fall below 50 degrees. Only in the sunny and warm areas in hardiness zones 11 and 12 can these trees be kept outside all year long. Their long, narrow leaves burst out from the center, creating a dramatic and exotic appearance. Just keep the soil moist and put the plant in medium to bright light and it will be very easy to care for!

What is the best soil for Cat Palms?
Cat Palms prefer a soil that drains well. Consider a soil with peat moss in it; we recommend our African Violet Mix.
What is the optimal light for Chamaedorea cataractarum?
Bright indirect light is ideal. Cat Palms love the light; they may start to lean toward the light source so every couple of weeks be sure to rotate your plant to keep it symmetrical.
How often should I water my Cat Palm?
Water when the top inch or two of soil is dry. This will keep the soil moist. As mentioned, choose a well-draining soil and a pot with drainage holes so there is no resting water in the bottom of the pot (which can cause root rot).
How do I fertilize my Cat Palm?
Any houseplant fertilizer will do, but Osmocote Granular fertilizer is best for 2 a year application (spring and summer). It is slow release and will provide your palm with continuous nutrients during its growing season.
