Growing Otto Luyken Laurels in the Garden

Otto Luyken Cherry Laurel Shrubs Otto Luyken Cherry Laurel is a cultivar that grows shorter than other cherry laurels and features spikes of creamy white flowers spikes that rise above the foliage in spring and give way to shiny black fruit which birds adore. The showy fragrant white flowers attract butterflies. It has attractive dark green foliage. The glossy dark green leaves are highly ornamental and remain dark green throughout the winter which adds a sense of permanence to the full sun to partial shade gardens. Prunus laurocerasus is one of the best evergreen shrubs for creating a low growing privacy hedge. This cherry laurel grows to 4 feet tall and 6 feet wide if left completely untrimmed and can occasionally reach heights of 8 feet where it is happiest. The evergreen foliage provides shelter for birds in the winter when little else is available. Be sure to choose the right location and conditions for your Otto Luyken Cherry Laurel to thrive. Spring and fall are ideal times to plant. Although anytime temps are not extreme you can plant this dwarf shrub. This Cherry Laurel grows in planting zones 6-9. Plant in full sun to partial shade. In warmer growing zones such as 8 and 9, some shade is recommended due to the higher daytime temperatures. Otto Luyken Laurels are adaptable to most soil conditions but prefer moist, well-draining soil. Too much moisture in the soil can cause root rot. Water deeply when planting and twice weekly for the first 3 months while your new plant is establishing. After establishment, Laurels are very drought tolerant. Two to Three inches of mulch should be applied to prevent weeds and will help keep the soil cool and moist. This also protects the roots during extreme temperatures. Fertilize when planting and in spring with a balanced, slow release fertilizer such as espoma Biotone. English Laurels can tolerate heavy pruning, but don't require it. Prune any time of the year. Another issue sometimes seen by gardeners is that when the foliage stays constantly wet the plants can occasionally develop either shot hole disease or powdery mildew. Both diseases are easily controlled with the use of organic copper fungicide. Neither disease is life-threatening and is easily controlled. For those with irrigation in the landscape beds if drip lines are used this will not be a problem. We recommend either using a soaker hose for larger plantings. when watering with the hose during the initial establishment period be sure to avoid watering the foliage and focus your efforts on the base of the plant around the root system. Try this pretty plant in containers to give your entryway, porch, patio, or deck an exciting, new look. For borders or hedges plant about 4 to 5 feet apart. for an open, natural look plant laurels about 9 feet apart to give your plants space in-between and create an open informal look. Cherry laurels are also known to be salt tolerant so they are perfect choices to be planted where salt spray is common.

Planting Information

We suggest when planting your newly purchased Otto Luyken Cherry Laurel plants that you dig a hole twice as wide as the root system but not deeper. Depending on the quality of your existing soil you may need to add a locally sourced compost or topsoil to the back-fill soil. We do not recommend using straight topsoil or compost as a back-fill soil because more times than not these products will retain entirely to much moisture and will cause the root system to rot. Adding compost or topsoil will help the young feeder roots of Otto Luyken Cherry Laurel to spread through the loose, nutrient rich soil, much easier than if you used solely the existing soil which more times than not will be hard and compacted. The most common cause of plant death after transplanting is planting the new plant to deep. That is why we do not recommend planting in a hole any deeper than the soil line of the plant in the pot. A good rule is that you should still be able to see the soil the plant was grown in after back-filling the hole. Bio-tone starter fertilizer is a great starter fertilizer that provides plants with mycorrhizae fungus. It is a naturally occurring beneficial fungus that colonizes on the new growing roots of plants. It creates a barrier between the roots of the plant and fungus and pathogens that can cause root rot. We love this product and use it on all plants we install in our own gardens. Bio-tone is a gardeners best friend and can help guarantee your success.
