Hooks and Lattice is a window box, planter, and exterior shutter manufacturer, supplier, and retailer located in Carlsbad, California. Since 2001, this elite garden retailer has served customers nationwide, offering top-quality home and garden products that improve both indoor and outdoor living spaces.

Additional benefits of the modern cylindrical planter are its smooth matte finish, lightweight nature, and durability to last in both extreme heat and freezing conditions. The planter can be conveniently shipped to your doorstep making for convenient and easy installation in your landscape.

Four Must-Have Plants For Your Winter Planter

Now that you’ve found the perfect planter, it’s time to select the perfect plants to display in it. Lucky for you, we have some ideas! Below are our top suggestions for elements to incorporate into your very own winter porch pot this holiday season.

emerald petite arborvitae

Emerald Petite Arborvitae

Your porch pot's ‘Thriller’ is going to be the standout centerpiece and the first thing that catches the eyes of onlookers. For this reason, you must be extremely selective in choosing which plant to feature as your main point of interest. We chose to feature the Emerald Petite Arborvitae.

As a dwarf version of the well-loved Emerald Green Arborvitae, the Emerald Petite shares many of the same loveable qualities, including lush evergreen foliage, a low-maintenance care regimen, and tolerance to drought conditions! The best part, though, is its small form, perfect for use in planters or small spaces.

tassel fern

Tassel Fern

The next important component of your planter is going to be the ‘Filler.’ This is what will ultimately fill the empty space around your ‘Thriller’ and add elements of texture and color to your porch pot. We chose to use the Tassel Fern as our ‘Filler’ due to its vibrant green hues and long feathery foliage that explodes out of the pot.

The Tassel Fern is a well-loved perennial that is deer-resistant, low-maintenance, and absolutely breathtaking in any display! It thrives best in partial shade and is best suited for USDA zones 5-8.

blue rug juniper

Blue Rug Juniper

No porch pot or container garden is complete without a ‘Spiller.’ This is a component of the planter that spills over the edges and creates a fuller and more whimsical look to a planter. For this winter porch pot, we chose the Blue Rig Juniper as our ‘Spiller.’

The Blue Rug Juniper was an obvious choice to incorporate into this planter. Its cool blue tones and needled foliage were the perfect complement to the shiny and smooth foliage of the arborvitae and fern. The Blue Rug is hardy to USDA zones 3-9 and highly adaptable to a range of environments. Its creeping habit will ensure that it fills the vacant spaces of the planter quickly.

red twig dogwood stems

Last on our list of elements to include in your winter planter is not quite a live element, but it surely adds an element of flair and beauty to your winter display. Whether you purchase a bundle or forage it from your yard, Red Twig Dogwood Stems bring a much-needed pop of color to any winter planter! Disperse the stems throughout the planter and watch as the vision of holiday cheer and festive flair really comes to life!
