What is the best light for ZZ Plants?
ZZ Plants are versatile in the sense that they can thrive in settings that experience a lot of natural light, as well as fluorescent light. In their native habitat, ZZ plants live outside in full sun and desert conditions. However, if you live in a home that does not receive natural light, it can handle the lowest of light conditions and even fluorescent light. They are happy with any level of light in that range.
How do I water ZZ Plants?
ZZ Plants like to dry out completely between watering. Similar to a Snake Plant, it does not like to stay or sit in water. Plants that are watered too often will not survive because this can cause root rot. If unsure, do not water. You can check this yourself by sticking your finger in the soil to gauge the moisture levels. While the top soil may be dry, oftentimes the soil underneath is moist and it’s a good indicator to skip watering. Typically, these plants can be watered every 3-4 weeks, however, this can change depending on where you live and the type of environment the plant grows in. If your home is cool and doesn’t receive as much light, you may be able to go longer without watering it. But if your home is warmer and gets more light than usual, you may need to water it more frequently than the standard 3-4 weeks.
How do I fertilize ZZ Plants?
It is very likely that ZZ Plants will not require any fertilizer for an extended period of time. However, any all purpose, foliage fertilizer will work. Indoor houseplant fertilizers fall into two groups: water soluble, liquid quick release, and granular, slow release fertilizers. Jack's Classic Houseplant Special Fertilizer works well as indoor plant food. It’s a powder, quick release fertilizer that is mixed with water to quickly provide nutrients to a plant that has been in a container for an extended time. On the other hand, Bio-tone Plus Starter Plus or Osmocote Plus Outdoor and Indoor Plant Food is an option as a granular, slow release fertilizer that can be applied while potting and planting.
What is the best soil for ZZ Plants?
ZZ plants need a very well draining soil, and prefer to have dry conditions. Regular potting mix with sand mixed in works well for plants potted in containers, otherwise a cactus potting mix would work. The cactus potting mix already has sand and other ingredients to encourage drainage. If desired, ZZ plants could be planted in mostly sand with very little peat moss added. As you repot your plant or plant it outdoors, you may come across some Rhizomes, which are large pieces of roots below the soil. These are normal to see when transplanting, the rhizomes store water and help the plant through times of drought.
