Plants don't like to sit in water. Aside from a few particular species, plants do not do well with wet feet, sitting in a pot full of excess water. If you want to use a pot that does not have any drainage holes, put your plant in a separate growers pot that will fit inside the decorative plant pot cover. This way the pot you see works as a tray, and you can empty out any excess water.

If you want to plant directly into your ceramic pot, you will need to carefully drill drainage holes. Standard drill bits that work on drywall will not work here and could result in a shattered pot. For unglazed ceramic or terracotta, a mason's drill bit will do. For glazed ceramic pots, you will need to use a diamond dust drill bit or a tile drill bit. Go very slowly and don't push - let the drill do the work in order to prevent cracking your ceramic flower pot. (This is why we like using a nursery pot inside our ceramic decorative pots, it's much easier!)

The main difference between terra cotta pots and ceramic pots is the porosity of the planter walls, and this makes all the difference - this determines which plants will be happier in which pots. Terracotta planters are unglazed and porous: this means that the material will allow air and moisture through its walls, helping with root development and moisture control. These pots are perfect for plants that prefer to dry out between waterings, such as many succulents, cacti, peperomias, hoyas, and snake plants. Glazed ceramic pots are not porous - the glaze prevents air and moisture from passing through. This means ceramic pots are best for plants who like even moisture, such as ferns, spider plants, pothos, or calatheas.
