How to Care for Holly Blue Maid Shrubs

Never plant Holly Blue Maid Shrubs deeper than originally planted in the pot. As a rule we always say that before you mulch you should still be able to see the soil from the original pot. Planting too deep can cause rotting of the stem and death to the tree. Holly Blue Maid Shrubs are moderately drought tolerant; however, they grow very slow without adequate water. Staking young trees is recommended to minimize the stress on the stem from winds blowing the tree. When planting a potted shrub, remember the only water source the shrub has, is its small root ball. All the water the shrub uses must come from them until new roots can grow into the surrounding soil. New shrubs should be watered twice weekly (Minimum), and under hot, drier conditions possibly more. Care should be taken not to over-water. More trees die from over-watering than under. Bio-tone starter fertilizer is a great starter fertilizer that provides plants with mycorrhizae fungus. It is a naturally-occurring beneficial fungus that colonizes on the new growing roots of plants. It creates a barrier between the roots of the plant and fungus and pathogens that can cause root rot. We love this product and use it on all plants we install in our own gardens. Bio-tone is a gardener's best friend and can help guarantee your success.
