Nandina Shrubs for Sale Online

Nandina domestica or heavenly bamboo is also commonly known as just nandina or sacred bamboo. Nandina sometimes gets a bad reputation due to its common name of bamboo. It's not bamboo at all, but individual members of this family do resemble bamboo in some ways. Nandinas are an evergreen shrub that you can find many uses for in the landscape. In colder climates, these plants can be somewhat deciduous, but they green up in the early spring. This tendency is not necessarily as a bad thing as when they lose some of their leaves; the red berries can show off. The berries will persist through the winter and add an interesting element to the winter landscape. Some people use the berries from nandina in place of holly berries in wreaths and other Holiday decorations. In southern climates, they will remain evergreen, but the leaf color will change, depending on the variety of the nandina. Nandinas are very easy to grow and care for. They are drought tolerant, disease resistant, and grow in a wide variety of soils. Nandinas grow particularly well in soils that retain soil moisture but do not always stay wet.

Some selections display brilliant red foliage like Nandina Obsession and produce red berries in fall and winter. Nandina Lemon Lime, on the other hand, produces yellow leaves with green highlights and rarely flowers, if ever.

Using Nandinas in the Landscape

Nandinas look their best when used in mass plantings due to their bold color. They can also be used as a specimen, or in borders but remember to plant them in front of darker colored plants such as Densa Inkberry Holly, which will make the bright, vibrant colors of nandina stand out.

Nandinas grow best if they are fertilized once in the spring and again in early summer. Nandina favors nutrient-rich soil and ample fertilization, that is why we recommend an Organic slow-release fertilizer, which tends to release nutrients over a more extended period. When selecting a fertilizer for your Nandina, if soil Ph is not an issue, a simple, balanced fertilizer can be used such as Espoma Plant-tone. Either chemical fertilizers or organic matter can be used successfully with nandinas.
