How to Care for NewGen Independence Boxwood

Be sure to read our planting instructions to ensure a healthy and happy plant for years to come!

How do I plant NewGen Independence Boxwood Shrubs?

How do I plant NewGen Independence Boxwood Shrubs?

To plant a group of NewGen Independence Boxwoods together, make sure to space them out properly, depending on the look you want to go for. Planting them at least 3 feet apart will work well for a formal hedge since they grow to a mature width of 3 feet. Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the container your boxwood arrived in. Position your plant so that it will not be too deep, you will want to be able to see the soil it came in when you are finished backfilling. Backfill the hole with an even mix of native soil and organic material, such as compost, humus or peat. Pat gently, layer with 2 - 3 inches of organic hardwood mulch and water thoroughly. Water very well when first planting, and check on your new boxwood every other day to make sure it stays evenly moist while it is getting established.

How do I fertilize NewGen Independence Boxwood Shrubs?

How do I fertilize NewGen Independence Boxwood Shrubs?

It is recommended that you add a healthy starter fertilizer to the bottom of the hole used to plant your newly acquired NewGen Independence Boxwood Shrub before planting, to introduce healthy micronutrients to the native soil for the young plant. Then, fertilize once a year in the very early spring, before spring growth begins. Since this shrub has a medium growth rate, fertilizing once in the early spring and maybe once in late spring with a balance all-purpose fertilizer will do the trick.

How do I water my Independence Boxwood Shrubs?

How do I water my Independence Boxwood Shrubs?

After planting with a 50/50 mix of existing soil and compost, give the NewGen Independence Boxwood a good, deep watering. A general rule of thumb is to count to 5 for every one gallon of pot size. For example, a one gallon pot would be watered until you count to 5 a three gallon pot would be 15 and so on. Check the plant daily for the first week or so and then every other day there after. Water using the counting method for the first few weeks. Boxwoods are happiest with even moisture in well draining soil, so make sure not to overwater them if there is a lot of rain or snow in a particular month.

How do I mulch NewGen Independence Boxwood Shrubs?

How do I mulch NewGen Independence Boxwood Shrubs?

We highly recommend that you mulch your NewGen Independence Boxwood with either a ground hardwood mulch or a ground cypress mulch, depending on your local availability. A 2 to 3 inch layer of mulch is sufficient, but remember to take care not to cover any part of the stem of the plant with mulch. A 1 inch space around the trunk will keep the mulch from impeding on the growing plant. Mulch is meant to regulate temperature, deposit nutrients slowly, and to stop weeds from stealing nearby resources.
