Purple Azalea Bushes for Sale Online

Perhaps one of America's favorite shrubs, Azaleas are a part of many gardens because of their amazing adaptability and classic presence in any landscape. These shrubs promote and support the natural ecosystem right in your yard. They help provide shelter and food for local pollinators such as butterflies, bees, birds, etc. A trick many gardeners use when planting these shrubs is using them as concealing shrubs. This means they will take advantage of their dense foliage by planting them around areas of your yard that aren't the most attractive. For example, if you have a gas meter in your yard, plant a purple azalea to conceal it. Their aromatic fragrance makes them the perfect plant to use for foundation planting or as a focal point in your landscape. No matter who walks by this plant, they will stop to admire how delicious they smell.

How to Care for Azaleas

Water

In the summer, we recommend you water your Azalea deeply and thoroughly to ensure each plant gets water that will equal to about 1 inch of rain per week. The key to not overwatering your shrub is to water slowly, this allows water to get absorbed into the root area instead of becoming runoff. Avoid overwatering as this will promote root rot.

Mulch

Mulching is not a necessary process when planting Azalea, however, it is highly recommended. The right mulch can add extra nutrients and protection from weeds. We recommend using a high-quality hardwood or ground cypress. Layer about 2 to 3 inches of mulch and remember not to cover the stem, keep the mulch about 1 inch away from the base of the trunk.

Pruning

The best time to prune your Azaleas is after the blossoms have faded but before their new blossoms bud. The most important reason for pruning Azaleas is to improve their overall health which will always reward you with a beautiful flush of new growth. Removing any dead or dying limbs will minimize the possibility of diseases and allow the plant to re-concentrate its energy and ultimately produce more foliage.

Fertilizer

These shrubs grow best when they are fertilized lightly in the spring after any possibility of a frost. They love a well-balanced, extended-release, fertilizer, we recommend Espoma Holly-tone. The next time to fertilize should be around 6 to 8 weeks later to encourage extra flowers and more growth on younger shrubs. Organic additions to the soil can also be combined with a shot of chemical fertilizer for maximum effect.
