Dormancy Notice: This plant, like many others, enters dormancy or semi-dormancy in the late fall through early spring. *THIS PLANT IS NOT DEAD. It is completely healthy but upon receiving the plant, you may notice it exhibits fewer leaves, discoloration, or complete leaf drop. This is normal and essential to the plant's health. In fact, planting during dormancy promotes root growth, giving your plant a better start for spring, when new foliage will begin to grow.

Limelight Hydrangea paniculata Shrubs for Sale Online

Limelight Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight') is a slightly compact, easy-to-care-for panicle hydrangea cultivar developed by Proven Winners. Loved for their iconic Hydrangea blooms in fun new flower color, these hardy garden shrubs are such a fun garden addition.

Limelight Hydrangeas, like many Panicle hydrangeas, are considered home landscaping staples that provide visual interest all year long. In the spring they burst with dark green leaves which make a great backdrop for your early spring flowering plants.

Then, the leaves darken to a deeper green and they explode in the summer with their own football-shaped flower clusters, shining with a pale green color. Those flowers will shift in color as they age, from pale green to pink to rose and then to burgundy in the fall.

This flowering shrub typically grows to 6-8 feet tall and just as wide. Ideal care for the Limelight Paniculata Hydrangea would include partial sun and well-drained soils. However, these are hardy shrubs and have learned to tolerate a variety of lighting conditions including full sun and heavy afternoon shade. Most impressive is this plant's ability to tolerate both hot summers and cold winters.

Unlike most hydrangea plants that boast color-changing tendencies, the soil pH does not affect the coloring of this plant's blooms.

Perfect for planting in USDA growing zones 3 through 9, the Limelight Hydrangea is a hardy garden edition that you can enjoy throughout the seasons. Gentle colors and large flowers make this plant ideal for a wide variety of garden designs. Most popularly used in hedge plantings, container gardens, or as a landscape focal point, this lime green Hydrangea is a garden staple.

These popular summer bloomers are also a great addition to cut flower arrangements.

How to Care for Limelight Hydrangea

Be sure to read our planting instructions to ensure a healthy and happy plant for years to come!

How do I mulch my Panicle Hydrangeas?

How do I mulch my Panicle Hydrangeas?

Applying a layer of mulch will help to retain moisture and protect your PG Hydrangeas from the harsh winter frosts. Limelight Hydrangeas appreciate organic mulch such as chopped leaves, compost, fir bark or pine straw. When these organic materials start to decompose, their natural nutrients are fed to the hydrangea, allowing for fuller, more vibrant shrubs. Be sure to leave a one inch gap between the stems and the mulch in order to prevent rot and disease. Note: while some perennials can be planted below hydrangeas for visual interest, it is much better to use mulch within the 6 feet immediately around the stem - proper spacing helps your garden to not compete for resources.

How do I fertilize Lime Light Hydrangeas?

How do I fertilize Lime Light Hydrangeas?

Limelight Hydrangea grows best if it is fertilized twice a year at specific times - once in early spring and again in the summer. Do not fertilize after August, so that your Hydrangea paniculata can begin to prepare for fall root development and winter dormancy. Both organic or chemical fertilizers are great options, but be sure not to over-fertilize. After applying your slow-release fertilizer, give your shrub a good watering to allow the solution to seep into the ground. Fertilizers intended for flowering plants or woody plants work well. You can also use a soil acidifier, but this will not affect the color of a Limelight Hydrangea.

How do I water my Limelight Hydrangea?

How do I water my Limelight Hydrangea?

Limelight Hydrangeas are some of the hardiest hydrangea varieties available, with their ability to grow almost anywhere within zones 3a to 9a. They can also handle a little more drought that other hydrangeas. Limelight hydrangeas need lots of drainage in their soil, as they cannot sit in water with wet roots for too long - this will cause root rot. Until your young shrub is established, we recommend leaving the hose at the base of your hydrangea once a week and let the water trickle slowly for a half an hour. Adjust this time and frequency depending on your needs - less if it is cooler, there has been lots of rain, or the water table is higher in your area; more if it is hotter, more arid, or there has been a drought.

How do I plant my Hydrangea Shrub?

How do I plant my Hydrangea Shrub?

Just like any hydrangea, it is recommended to establish your Limelight Hydrangea in a big that is twice as wide as the roots, but not any deeper. Prep the soil at the bottom of the hole so that your new hydrangea is set up for success. We recommend Biotone Starter Plus as a great way to add nutrition and other helpful elements to the area. Gypsum will break up the soil if it is very dense or a heavy clay. Pine fines can help balance the soil well for what hydrangeas like. Once you have amended the soil, then position you hydrangea so that the soil from the nursery pot will still be visible at the top, and backfill the hole. Make sure you plant your Limelight Hydrangea at least 4 feet away from any structures or other large plants.
