Types of Bird of Paradise Plants
Bird of paradise plants are not a large group of plants by any means. In fact, there are really only two kinds of Bird of Paradise sold today. They are White Bird of Paradise and Orange Bird of Paradise.
Note: There is a yellow bird of paradise and we are currently evaluating it. Should this plant prove itself to have merit we will begin offering it in the spring of 2020.
Orange Bird of Paradise: No other plant creates a more tropical feel like an orange bird of paradise plant, Truly one of nature's works of art. It produces superb flowers that are shaped like a tropical bird in flight. Some say they resemble a long-necked bird's head peeking out from the dark gray-green foliage. Strelitzia reginae is its botanical Latin name.
When grown exclusively Indoors as a houseplant, the orange bird of paradise will rarely bloom. But when moved outdoors during the warm summer months it produces brilliant, long-lasting flowers. The Orange bird of paradise plant can grow up to 4 feet tall.
White Bird of Paradise: The White Bird of Paradise or strelitzia Nicolai is one of the most commonly used plants by interior design professionals. this is largely due to its dramatic, arching dark green leaves, The White Bird of Paradise does require a good deal of sunlight to flower, so don't expect to see large clusters of flowers indoors.
Although it typically does not bloom indoors, that's not to say it won't if given the optimal amount of sun in a sunroom or atrium in a commercial building for example. White Birds are mainly used for their foliage.
Caring for Bird of Paradise Plants
Soil: Bird of Paradise are tolerant of a range of potting soil types. Birds of paradise will produce their best growth in fertile, well-drained potting soil. In our trials, we have found them to be happiest in Ocean Forest Potting Soil. We believe this is due to the high amount of organic matter in the soil. It is a well-drained soil with a larger particle size which Birds of Paradise seem to prefer.
Fertilizer: Bird of Paradise are heavy feeders mostly due to their rapid growth. During the spring and summer months fertilize the plants once a month with an all-purpose liquid feed like Jack's classic All-Purpose Fertilizer. You can also top-dress in spring and once again in mid-summer with Osmocote Indoor /Outdoor granular fertilizer if that is easier for you. There is no need to feed Bird of Paradise during the winter when plant growth slows.
Humidity: The Bird of Paradise appreciates the occasional misting with clean water. Once a week or so during the spring and summer but more often during the late fall and winter due to the lowered humidity levels during the months.
Light: Bird of Paradise prefer lots of sunlight. It's best to place them near an east-, south, or west-facing window. They will tolerate lower light levels but will do their best with copious amounts of light.
Water: Bird of Paradise prefer moist, but not soggy soil during the growing season. During the winter months, allow the top two inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Stick your finger into the soil and if it feels wet it probably is. wait for water.
Pro tip: If your on city water that is treated try letting your tap water sit uncovered overnight to allow for the chlorine and fluoride to evaporate before watering your plants.
The Bird of Paradise plants cannot handle ‘wet feet’. This means that the roots should not be allowed to sit in water. An easy way to avoid this is to place your plant in a saucer filled with decorative gravel.
Additional tips to keep your Bird of Paradise Happy:
Cleaning the Leaves of Bird of Paradise: Larger Leaved plants tend to collect dust on their leaves. This can simply be wiped off with a soft cloth dipped in water. For a shine on the leaves, we recommend Bonide Leaf Shine and Moisture Guard. This will add a shine and reduce the amount of moisture that the plants lose through the leaves.
Bird of Paradise Plants are not considered to be Pet-safe. There are toxins found in the leaves and can adversely affect humans and pets if consumed. Mild mouth and stomach irritation may occur.
