Skyrocket Juniper

Juniperus scopulorum 'Skyrocket'

We've been amazed by the amount of uses we've found for the skyrocket juniper. This columnar tree has found its way into our mixed patio planters, dry hillside plantings and just about every area that other evergreen trees have failed. Its drought tolerance and cold hardiness is second to none. Bonus: Its deer resistant as well.

Skyrocket Juniper Trees for Sale Online

The stately, columnar form makes the Sky Rocket Juniper tree the narrowest juniper available, best used to frame an entrance or to define a boundary. It is excellent when used as a vertical accent in patio planters. Durable and versatile. Very little care is needed to maintain these wonderful trees.

Skyrocket Juniper's fantastic blue-green foliage goes excellent with other green plants. This plant tolerates road salt along roadways and can be used as a substitute for the Italian Cypress in colder regions. Skyrocket Juniper is ideal for dry locations in the full sun and can be used for mass plantings, entranceways, and privacy screens.

How to Care for Skyrocket Juniper

Before you buy a Skyrocket Juniper Tree, make sure to read about the recommended care instructions to keep this plant healthy and flourishing.

How do I plant my Skyrocket Juniper Tree?

How do I plant my Skyrocket Juniper Tree?

When planting your Skyrocket Juniper plants, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but not deeper. Depending on the quality of your existing soil, you may need to add locally sourced compost or topsoil to the back-fill soil. Adding compost or topsoil will help the young feeder roots of Skyrocket Juniper root system spreads through the loose, nutrient-rich soil, much easier than if you used solely the existing soil, which more times than not will be hard and compacted. The most common cause of plant death after transplanting is planting the new plant too deep. A good rule is that you should still see the soil the plant was grown in after back-filling the hole.

How often do I water my Juniper Tree?

How often do I water my Juniper Tree?

After backfilling and lightly compacting the 50/50 mix of existing soil and compost, give the Skyrocket Juniper good deep watering. Most of the water you put on the plant at first will run away from the plant until the soil is soaked. A general rule of thumb is to count to 5 for every one gallon of pot size. For example, a one-gallon pot would be watered until you count to 5 and a three-gallon container would be 15, and so on. Check the plant daily for the first week or so; and every other day after the first week. Water your plant using the counting method for the first few weeks. Juniper trees, once established, will only need additional watering during extended periods of drought.

What type of mulch should I use for my Juniper Tree?

What type of mulch should I use for my Juniper Tree?

We highly recommend that you mulch your Skyrocket Juniper with either a ground hardwood mulch or a ground cypress mulch depending on your local availability. Any mulch will do, but cypress or hardwood mulch will be of a higher quality and provide better nutrition overall as they break down. Adding mulch to the base of your plant will help keep weeds that compete with your new investment for water and nutrients away. A 2 to 3-inch layer of mulch is sufficient but remember to take care not to cover any part of the stem with mulch. It's better to leave a one-inch gap of space between the mulch and the stem or trunk of the plant.

What type of fertilizer should I use with my Sky Rocket Juniper?

What type of fertilizer should I use with my Sky Rocket Juniper?

Upright junipers such as Skyrocket Juniper grow best if they are fertilized lightly in the spring once frost has passed with a well-balanced, extended-release fertilizer such as Espoma Tree-tone or Holly tone to provide the extra acid that junipers crave. Fertilize Skyrocket Juniper again in late summer to mid-fall.
